Word of the Week Wednesday: Converge

This Wednesday’s Word of the Week is: Converge.

The basic sense of the word is to come together.  There are a bunch of technical, mathematical uses of the word, but they all have the same sense of coming together and don’t interest me much.

For me, when I hear the word, I think of different things moving along various paths to join at a central point sometimes with a sense of destiny.

Examples include:

Convergent Evolution: Unrelated animals with similar features; wings on birds and bats for example.

Convergence: A goth culture festival.

Harmonic Convergence:  The New Age term for a planetary alignment that occurred in 1987.

But my number one, all-time favorite use of converge would be the famous center of mystical convergence located in Sunnydale, California: The Hellmouth!

Of course, no discussion of convergence would be complete without at least pointing to it’s antonym: divergence.
